Before I start, no. I don’t have all the stars and all the kart pieces and won every cup on every CC. But I have 100%ed 50cc and am missing just one star on 100cc. Like previous Mario Kart games, I’m counting seeing the credits. And I’ve seen the credits. Why haven’t I done 150cc? Because I haven’t yet. I keep meaning to, but the online – even against randoms – is just too easy to slip into and then two …
I’m not going to say very much about this apart from that I’ve spent many hours on it already today and it’s fantastic. No, it’s more than fantastic. Especially online, where I managed to hold my own. Which was nice. I’ll post again with more details in the future, but for now, here’s my very first race:
I’ve been picking at this for the last couple of weeks, doing a cup or two here and there. It still plays well, I still remember the tracks and most of the tricks, and I’ve found myself wanting Mario Kart 8 as a result. Previously I wasn’t really that fussed. Now, NEED. I’ve done all of 50cc and most of 100cc so far, but I’ve seen the credits so it’s finished if not 100%ed. That’s not terribly important though!
Hey, did you know that the free GBA games for 3DS Ambassadors were up today? Well, they are. And Mario Kart: Super Circuit (wot is ACE) is one of them. Of course, the 3DS Mario Kart, Mario Kart 7 is out too. And probably better. But you could have both! Hurrah! Skidding on to the Nintendo 3DS comes Mario Kart 7. And the “no-one online” RUBBISHNESS continues, with, well, no-one online in Mario Kart DS. I waited. And waited. Then expanded my search from “Friends” to “Regional”, and then waited some more. Then went to “Worldwide”. And waited. And waited again. No-one was there! Pah.
Just a quick go online (mainly to see if I really did appear in the “whos online” bit of www.nintendowifi.co.uk – I didn’t), and played a Rivals game. I don’t know how it calculates the “rival-ity” of the people you play, but all three had 170+ wins, and less than 10 losses each. Rubbish. As in, I was. Scraped joint second, somehow, but only through luck in getting the right weapons at the right times. Pah.
Although I’d previously finished the game, I managed to unlock the rest of the Retro Cups in Mirror Mode today, and then win those too. Got an A rank and a Star rank for the Leaf and Lightning Cups respectively. I can now choose any kart for any character. Not really sure what advantage that gives me, but anyway.
Hmm. I just did the second Retro Cup on Mirror Mode, and came first overall. For some reason, it didn’t unlock the next Cup as I’d expected it to. Which means I’ve run out of Cups to play. Why hasn’t it opened up any more? I know I have a B rank on the Cup I did today, but surely that shouldn’t make any difference?
All of the 150cc cups have now been won! By me! Which means the game is completed! Well, technically, there is still Mirror Mode to go (and the missions), but the game proper is all done now. Almost all of my ranks are A and above, with just one or two Bs. I think there may be a D in there somewhere too, but I think I might have redone it. I’ve also done all the DS cups in Mirror …
I’ve now completed all of the “new” 150cc cups! Some of the tracks are pretty tricky to win, especially if the front two drivers happen to be heavy characters like Donkey Kong, Wario or Bowser. They can spin you out just by ramming you, which isn’t nice at all. I’ve also done the first Retro Cup on 150cc too. Only three left to go!

First off, I completed all of the rest of 100cc Mode, getting A-or-above ranks on each and every cup. Then, I played the first Cup on 150cc. It didn’t actually seem to be a great deal harder, in fact, but I did drop to third at the end of the final race so got “just” 36 points instead of 40. Then, it was ONLINE TIME. 50cc Mode Complet0red! I’ve been though all the Cups now, with maximum points on them all, and unlocked Daisy as a new character. I then went and did some more of the Missions, and completed all of levels 1, 2, 3 and 4. There are even bosses in that mode! After that, I played some Me vs 7 CPU Battle Mode. Played through all of the “new” Cups on 50cc mode today, getting a Star Rank (and maximum points) for all of them. I’ve unlocked a new character as a result, it seems. And hurrah – there’s a Star Road track! After that, I played the lovely Choobs over t’tinternet. Sadly, he was rubbish, and I thrashed the living pants out of him.
